Guarding Against a Total Disregard of National Security.

In early July 2024 as many of us were preparing to enjoy and celebrate U.S. Independence Day, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a guilty plea of Douglas Edward Robertson, Vice President, KanRus Trading Company, for illegal exports and money laundering. (opens a new window) The Kansas based KanRus company was illegally selling advanced U.S. avionics equipment to Russian companies, including groups servicing Russian-aircraft manufacturing.  

Robertson pleaded guilty to multiple export control violations. He admitted to conspiring to circumvent U.S. export laws and illegally export controlled equipment and technology to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). Attempting to evade U.S. export laws by falsifying export forms and using intermediaries in attempt to obfuscate his actions.  

Beyond a criminal act, Robertson’s actions represent a complete betrayal of duty to community and country. With a total disregard for the safety and security of the many men and women who give everything to protect and serve a great nation.  

If behavior like Robertson’s was an isolated incident of greed, we could take some comfort in knowing that he was caught and is being prosecuted. The uncomfortable truth is that this type of behavior, although not commonplace, is becoming more prevalent.
